Lamine Yamal "THE PROPHECY"
"THE PROPHECY"
Some moments in sports seem almost too unbelievable to be real.
In 2007, Lionel Messi unknowingly participated in what would become one of the most famous photographs in football history, a charity calendar shoot where he was pictured bathing a five-month-old baby named Lamine Yamal.
At the time, it was nothing more than a photo. Nineteen years later... it became something much bigger.
That same baby grew into one of the brightest stars the game has ever seen, leading Spain to FIFA World Cup glory and ushering in a new generation of football. Whether you believe in destiny, coincidence, or something in between, the parallels are impossible to ignore.
When I first saw the original photograph, I never imagined it would soon inspire a painting. But after Spain's triumph, the story felt complete. I knew it deserved to be reimagined.
In this piece, the roles have been reversed.
Rather than Messi bathing a young Lamine Yamal, it is now Lamine gently washing the Championship Trophy, symbolizing the arrival of a new era. The trophy represents more than a championship, it represents the passing of the torch.
Like all of my artwork, every detail was intentionally placed to tell the story.
Breaking Down The Art
The Trophy
Instead of a baby in the bath, the Trophy takes center stage. As Yamal carefully washes away the battle from the tournament, it symbolizes both victory and the responsibility that comes with becoming football's newest icon.
The Towel
Draped over the tub is an Argentina-inspired towel marked with the number 19, a subtle nod to the years separating the original photograph from this historic moment. In addition, Messi wore number 19 in the early years of his career.
The Goat
Replacing the famous rubber duck is a small rubber goat, a playful tribute to Lionel Messi and the endless GOAT debate that helped make the original photograph so legendary.
The Soap Bottle
Labeled "Jabón Para Campeones" ("Soap for Champions"), the bottle reinforces the lighthearted theme while celebrating Spain's World Cup victory.
Established 2007
The tub bears the inscription "EST. 2007," honoring the year the original photograph was taken, the beginning of a story that no one could have predicted.
The Wall Behind Him
Covering the background are rough chalk-style sketches documenting the journey:
Pau Cubarsi holding his best young player award
Rodri holding the much deserved Golden Ball - best player on the tournament
Unai Simon holding the Golden Glove has the top goalkeeper
The number 19, repeated throughout the wall as a reminder of the incredible coincidence tying the two moments together.
"19 Años Después" ("19 Years Later") written across the top.
"The Next Era" standing as the central message of the piece.
Even subtle references such as Matthew 22:37, La Masia (The academy both Messi and Yamal played at), match scores, and championship moments are woven into the artwork, rewarding those who spend time discovering every hidden detail.
Some stories are written.
Others seem destined.
Whether you see it as fate, prophecy, or simply the greatest coincidence football has ever witnessed, one thing is undeniable:
The next era has arrived.
This moment is now immortalized forever.
